Concrete driveways, patios, slabs and more in Mount Washington

Mount Washington sits on a limestone plateau between the Floyds Fork and Salt River valleys. Soil maps show silt loam over clay across most of it, with rock near the surface on slopes. Winters here freeze and thaw, and Kentucky's residential code rates concrete weathering as severe in every county. A walk that heaves or a step that settles usually has its cause in the soil below.

Muddy Boots Concrete is a concrete contractor, and Mount Washington is part of our service area. We pour concrete driveways, patios, sidewalks, steps, slabs, foundations and retaining walls for homes and businesses here. Stamped and decorative concrete is our specialty. Call or text (502) 889-1624 for a free estimate, and we will put the quote in writing.

Driveways and Patios for a Fast-Growing Mount Washington

Mount Washington began as The Crossroads, where the road from Bardstown to Louisville crossed the road from Shepherdsville to Shelbyville. Today those roads are US 31E and KY 44. The 2020 Census counted 18,090 people in town, nearly twice the 9,117 counted in 2010.

The city's stormwater plan says growth has run east and west along KY 44, through annexations and new subdivision sections. Census survey estimates put more than half the homes in town at 2000 or newer. About four in five are detached single-family houses. City council minutes from 2026 still mention new developments, such as Harvest Point.

If your house is one of the newer ones, the job may be an addition. That could be a concrete patio or pool deck out back, or a wider drive for one more car. In the older sections of town, a cracked drive or walk may need a tear out and a new pour.

What Is Under the Ground in Mount Washington?

USDA soil maps put Crider silt loam across much of the gentle ground around town. It is silt on top over clay that weathered from the limestone below. The same survey rates the clay under most of town moderate to high for shrink and swell. On the slopes, Caneyville soils sit over hard limestone 20 to 40 inches down.

The town's own history counts three limestone quarries here in the mid-1800s. The city's land disturbance form lists karst conditions as one reason a plan review can cost more. Karst is the Kentucky Geological Survey's term for ground where dissolving limestone forms sinkholes and underground drainage.

The plateau falls toward Floyds Fork on the north and the Salt River on the south. Rain drains off through ditches and pipes to small runs, like Wells Run and Bethel Branch, that feed those two. Where a lot drops off, poured concrete retaining walls can hold a drive or a patio level. Grading before a pour sets the fall, so water runs away from the house.

Which Office Handles Permits in Mount Washington?

Inside the city limits, the City of Mount Washington Department of Building Codes reviews and inspects construction. It works from the Kentucky Building Code and the Kentucky Residential Code. Before a building permit, the city asks for a zoning compliance certificate from Bullitt County Planning and Zoning.

The city also has an encroachment and land disturbance application. It lists sidewalk repairs and entrances as Class 1 work and asks for a plot plan showing the driveway. An entrance onto a state route, such as KY 44, takes a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet permit. The city has its own stormwater and drainage inspector, too.

Outside the city limits, start with Bullitt County Planning and Zoning, which issues county building permits. For an entrance onto a county road, the county points you to the Bullitt County Road Department. Before any machine digs or grades, Kentucky law calls for a locate request through Kentucky 811. It has to go in at least two full working days ahead.

Commercial Concrete Along KY 44 and the US 31E Bypass

The city's stormwater plan calls Mount Washington a bedroom community for Louisville commuters. Light industry sits along KY 44 and in a business park on the north end. Shopping centers line the US 31E bypass on the east end of town.

We pour commercial concrete for sites like these: slabs, sidewalks, pads, curbs and dumpster pads. Footings and foundations for commercial buildings are part of the work too. We work with the superintendents and project managers who run the job, on their schedule and site rules.

On a commercial site, the city's land disturbance permit is Class 3 or Class 4. Both classes need a city-approved stormwater pollution prevention plan, or SWPPP, before the application goes in. Build that review into the schedule before the first pour.

Mount Washington FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Mount Washington

A few of the questions we hear most around Mount Washington. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (502) 889-1624

Do I need a permit to replace a driveway or sidewalk in Mount Washington?
It depends on the job and the lot. Inside the city limits, the Department of Building Codes covers sidewalk repairs and entrances on its land disturbance form. Outside the city, Bullitt County Planning and Zoning is the office to ask. Either one has the final word, and we point you to the right office.
What does a concrete driveway cost in Mount Washington?
Size, thickness, tear out of the old drive, grading and the finish set most of the price. Shallow rock or a steep slope adds work. Inside the city, a new entrance also carries the city's permit fee and a refundable deposit. Call or text (502) 889-1624 for a free estimate, and we will put the quote in writing.
Does the limestone under Mount Washington change a concrete job?
It can: some slopes here have hard rock 20 to 40 inches down. Kentucky's residential code puts the frost depth for footings at 24 inches in Bullitt County. Where grade work exposes solid rock, the code lets a footing bear on it. If you know of a sinkhole or a soft spot on the lot, show us at the estimate.
My address says Mount Washington. Am I inside the city limits?
Not always. Census maps show the 40047 ZIP area covers about three times the land inside the city limits. The city posts an interactive zoning map on its website. For lots outside the city, Bullitt County Planning and Zoning is the office to ask.
Do you pour concrete in the rest of Bullitt County?
Yes. Mount Washington is part of our service area, which runs about 40 miles around Louisville. In Bullitt County, that takes in Shepherdsville and Hillview as well. Call or text (502) 889-1624 and tell us where the job is.
