Poured concrete walls that hold back the hill

Muddy Boots Concrete builds concrete retaining walls for homes and businesses around Louisville. A wall helps when a slope keeps washing into the yard or a drive needs flat ground. Our walls are poured concrete, built on a footing with drainage behind them.

Some are short garden and landscape walls along a bed or a yard edge. Others hold up the edge of a concrete driveway cut into a bank. A wall can also give a concrete patio level ground on a slope. We form each wall on site and pour it solid.

What We Handle

  • Poured concrete retaining walls set on a concrete footing
  • Garden and landscape walls along beds and yard edges
  • Walls that hold the edge of a drive or a patio on a slope
  • Footings sized to the height and the design of the wall
  • Steel that runs from the footing up into the wall
  • Crushed stone and a perforated pipe behind the wall for drainage
  • Grading above and below the wall to move water away
  • Walls built to an engineer's design when the code calls for one

Where Louisville Yards Need a Retaining Wall

South of Louisville, around Bernheim Forest, the land rises into the knobs. The Kentucky Geological Survey describes them as steep, often cone-shaped hills. On any sloped lot, rain carries soil downhill, and a level spot often needs a wall at its edge.

A retaining wall turns part of a slope into usable ground. The soil is cut back or filled in, and the wall holds the new grade at its edge. Grading above and below the wall sends water away from it, and that is part of our site grading work.

How Do We Build a Poured Concrete Retaining Wall?

Before any machine digging, Kentucky law requires a locate request to Kentucky 811 at least two full working days ahead. The utilities mark their own lines, so point out any private ones, like a sprinkler line. Then the footing trench is dug to the depth and width the wall's design calls for.

A poured retaining wall has two parts: a concrete footing and the wall that rises from it, called the stem. Steel runs through both and ties them together. The footing is poured first, and the stem is formed and poured on top of it.

The footing gets wider as the wall gets taller, because a wider base resists tipping. Long walls get control joints at set spacing, so any shrinkage crack forms at a planned line. Backfill goes in once the concrete has gained strength, so the new wall is not pushed while it cures.

Retaining Wall Drainage and When a Wall Needs an Engineer

Water behind a wall adds load. Wet soil presses harder than dry soil. When the backfill cannot drain, the wall also carries the full pressure of the water.

So the drainage goes in with the wall. The standard is clean crushed stone behind the wall, with a perforated pipe along the base to carry water out. Where the design calls for weep holes, they let water out through the face of the wall.

The Kentucky Residential Code draws the line for homes. A wall holding back more than 4 feet of soil must be designed to accepted engineering practice. So must a wall over 2 feet tall that carries other loads, such as a driveway above it. Those walls get an engineer's design, and we build to it.

FAQ

Retaining Walls Questions, Answered

Common questions about retaining walls around Louisville and the Louisville area. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (502) 889-1624

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall around Louisville?
It depends on the wall and the address, because permit rules vary by city and county. In Jeffersontown, the city's permit list says a home's retaining wall up to 4 feet tall needs no building permit. The city measures that height from the ground at the bottom of the wall. For your lot, the city or county permit office has the answer, and we point you to the right one.
How deep does a retaining wall footing go?
The wall's design sets the footing's depth and width, and a taller wall needs a wider footing. For comparison, house footings around Louisville must reach at least 24 inches below finished grade under the Kentucky Residential Code. That depth protects them from frost.
Why do retaining walls lean or crack?
Water trapped behind the wall is a common cause, because soggy soil pushes harder. Another is a footing too small for the height, which lets the wall tip or slide. Drainage and footing size get settled before the pour for that reason.
Is a poured concrete wall different from a block wall?
A poured wall is formed on site and cast as solid concrete. Steel ties it to its footing. Block walls are stacked units, built by masonry or landscape contractors. The walls we build are poured concrete.
What should I ask a retaining wall contractor?
Ask where the water behind the wall will go, and how wide and deep the footing will be. Ask whether the height or the load above the wall calls for an engineer's design. We answer those questions on site and put the quote in writing.
What does a concrete retaining wall cost?
Length and height drive most of the price. The footing size, the drainage, access for the concrete truck and any engineering add to it. We look at the site for a free estimate and put the quote in writing. Our retaining wall cost guide covers published market ranges in Kentucky.
